Free Advice: WrinklesHow can I treat Wrinkles and Aging Skin? How can I treat Wrinkles? Wrinkles, fine lines and the aging changes of roughness, pigmentation, sallow ness, laxity and dryness on the face or eyelids are the result of many factors. Approximately 90% of all changes in skin are due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet light (non-visible wavelengths of sunlight), cigarette smoking, ozone depletion, and pollutants are a few external and internal insults that can cause the skin to age. Ultraviolet light (UVB and particularly UVA) not only damages the DNA in the cells of the skin, but also inhibits the repair mechanisms that repair damaged skin cells. Ultraviolet light also generates free radical molecules of oxygen that can cause oxidative damage to the skin. The breakdown or depletion of DNA, collagen, Elastin, hyaluronic acid and other supporting molecules in the dermis all lead to the clinical changes of facial aging. Note: Wrinkles usually take 30 years to develop and are slow to remove. Most topical products are designed to moisturize and hydrate the skin, lessen fine lines, reduce roughness and pigmentation, and protect the skin from sun damage. Treatment: DermatologistRx has a full line of products for lessening fine lines around the eyes and on the face. However, there are ways you can prevent the changes of facial aging without spending a dime. First, stop smoking. There are good clinical studies that show smoking can cause a dramatic increase in aging and wrinkles of the face. Also, a one pack a day smoker will save $700.00 a year by stopping smoking. Second, avoid sun exposure on you face and arms by wearing clothes with long sleeves, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB wavelengths of sunlight. Sunscreens with Parsol 1789, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide block both UVA and UVB. Third, eat a balanced diet. DermatologistRx believes if you are good to the inside the outside will be good to you, too. Fourth, get 8 hours of sleep each night and think positive thoughts. If you are going to get wrinkles get ones that accompany a smile instead of a frown. Fifth, drink 8 glasses of water a day. Adequate hydration of the body is important for all the bodies functions. Sixth, take a multivitamin and the antioxidants Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Recent scientific evidence suggests that the antioxidants Vitamin E (400 units) and Vitamin C (250mg-500mg) when taken orally may help remove the free radicals that damage the skin caused from sun exposure. Seventh, moisturize the skin. The skin like shoe leather will become dried out if not treated properly. Rehydrate the skin daily with a moisturizer. Not all people require moisturizers, particularly those with oily skin and acne. DermatologistRx also has moisturizers and cleansers for sensitive skin. Eighth, glycolic acid an alpha-hydroxy acid from the sugarcane plant has been shown to reduce the fine lines of aging and to reduce blotchy pigmentation on the face. Start with a lower strength (2.5% or 5%) preparation first. Strengths above 5% may be irritating. A gel is usually more drying and stronger than a lotion or a cream. Ninth, Vitamin C creams and lotions. Topical Vitamin C has been shown to increase collagen production and reduce the damaging effects of the sun. NOTE: Not all topical Vitamin C creams will improve the skin only those preparations with stable forms of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are beneficial. Cellex C, Murad, EmerginC, Glytone and Citrix are companies that provide active and beneficial forms of topical Vitamin C. Ten, Kinerase, a cytokine plant growth factor, has been shown to delay age-related changes in vitro cultured human cells. Kinerase is neither an exfoliant nor a dermal irritant and does not thin the skin. Kinerase can be applied on the hands, chest, shoulders and other sun-damaged areas. There are no restrictions on the use of Kinerase by pregnant or nursing women. Kinerase users typically see results in 4 to 6 weeks. There are no restrictions on how long Kinerase can be used. Kinerase can be used concurrently with other skin products. There are no skin types, known disorders or diseases that preclude the use of Kinerase. Kinerase is available in cream or lotion in 0.1% concentration. Kinerase cream and lotion are hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic. Make up and sunscreen can be applied immediately after applying Kinerase. The shelf life of Kinerase is 3 years. All products should be used as directed on the product container. Any product that causes irritation should be discontinued. The information provided at DermatologistRx is not a substitute for a face-to-face consultation with a dermatologist or your physician. |
